AIA HONORS SAG HARBOR ARCHITECT FOR BRIDGEHAMPTON DESIGN
Sag Harbor architect James Merrell received a 2003 Archi Design Award Commendation for his design of the new Urban Archaeology building in Bridgehampton. The building was the only project recognized by the awards jury in the category of Commercial/Retail Architecture.
The jury cited Mr. Merrells sensitivity to a variety of neighbors: the building faces Montauk Highway, but also borders the United Methodist Church and a well-established residential area. The jury also noted the building's simple lines, materials and detailing, which in combination create a minimalism that recalls the lost garages and barn structures that once lined Montauk Highway.
Mr. Merrell's firm was selected by the building's owner, Manhattan Art Dealer and Hamptons resident Louis K.Meisel. According to Meisel, "I selected an architect who I knew would raise the bar for commercial architecture in the Hamptons. And I am proud that the AIA agrees."
